Girl of the Moment: Ashley Madekwe

I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in my obsession with the hit new show Revenge. It was hard enough pulling myself away from the TV long enough to compile this post!

In a case of "Celebs: They're just like us!", doe-eyed brunette Ashley Madekwe (aka Ashley Davenport on the show) just so happens to be a long-time fashion blogger with enviable style, of course. Her blog Ring My Bell is a compilation of personal style posts, behind the scenes pics, and trend round ups peppered with personal notes about settling into her new hometown of LA.

I love that a lot of her wardrobe comes from Topshop, Urban Outfitters and ASOS as well as the fact that she's just using a simple blogger template and posts her style shots on Lookbook.nu. Makes her style feel a liiiiitle more attainable. One thing's for sure: The girl has a seriously fierce shoe collection.

4. Bee from Atlantic Pacific collaborated with Jewel Mint for New York Fashion Week - the super cool jewellery collection designed by Kate Bosworth and her stylist Cher Coulter. Their site allows you to set up a style profile and have personalised selections sent to you each month. Love this concept! And love the XO rings Bee was wearing.

4. Annie Stevens is healing through baking over on Fairfax's snazzy new Daily Life site, edited by the lovely Sarah Oakes who gave me one of my first jobs at Girlfriend magazine. Whipping up a batch of cupcakes is definitely my kind of therapy.

So, what's this all about then?

I went shopping last night after work. Well, tried to go shopping. You see, I spend so long on the computer these days, any attempt at real world shopping usually entails a mad dash at lunchtime with a goal in mind and more often than not results in me heading back to the office empty handed and frustrated. Why is it that you can never find something you like when you're looking for it?

This particular shopping experience, however, reminded me just why I started this blog way back at the beginning of 2009 (after mulling over the idea for almost a year!). I had a purpose. I fell in love with these shoes whilst flicking through Grazia as I munched down on sushi during my lunch break. I immediately went to the website to find they had sold out online, so decided to make a visit to Myer after work in the hope that I could strut into the office in said heels tomorrow.

Easier said than done.

You see, the issue with real-world stores is that they don't always match the stock that you find online or indeed in that glossy magazine. My goal when starting As Seen In was to cut out the futile and hopeless missions girls everywhere were making in the quest to pick up something they'd seen and loved, like I had many times before.

Back then, online shopping in Australia was pretty basic. I could literally count the number of quality online stores on two hands, and even then, the level of service, quality of photography and quantity of stock on hand left much to be desired.

While colleagues and friends swore by mail-forwarding services, choosing to shop from international stores, I wanted to make it easier to buy the items Aussie girls were spotting every day and, with the exception of those living in metro Melbourne and Sydney, had little hope of actually purchasing.

Over the past few years I've seen stores fall to the wayside, and others who continue to stock seasons-old stock at full price which I'm sure irks everyone as much as it does me. The good news is Australian labels, chains and boutiques have jumped on the express train to the new millennium and we now have an endless number of e-boutiques at our fingertips. Literally.

But back to my shopping experience last night.

After finding the Siren section of the shoe department in Myer (thinking to myself, 'that's seriously it?'), I didn't find the style I was after, nor a sales assistant who might have been able to help me. I had a browse through the rest of the displays, and at the risk of sounding like a snob, wondered how some designs make it into stores. I made a quick stop to the restroom, which, pardon the bluntness, reeked, hightailed it up to ladies wear and discovered a skirt I quite liked only to find both in my size had broken zippers.

I couldn't help but compare this experience to the pleasure I get from sitting comfortably in my own apartment, listening to my music collection, sipping wine if the mood should so take me there (it can't hurt, right?), and browsing through clean, well-designed designed online stores and easily selecting the items I love.

It doesn't matter that ~~half~~ most of my online hauls don't make it past the shopping cart (when my head snaps itself back from dallying about in the clouds), what matters is that I would choose an online shopping experience over a real-world one most times these days.

I love wandering through markets, scouring op shops and browsing through gorgeous, well-curated boutiques when I have the time like no other, but when it comes to convenience and tracking down that must-have item, I'm online shopping's number one fan!

Gorgeous Autumn beauty buys

It's hard to believe a change of season is just over a week away when in Queensland it's feeling steamier than ever! Here's a peek at some beauty products I've been testing out and adding to my basket this month...

My skin has been going a bit wacko this summer so I'm becoming more and more interested in using natural and organic skin care products. I first heard of LaMav from Jessica over at The Wellness Warrior. They say: "The Entire La Mav range is certified organic, certified cruelty-free and guaranteed to be free from harsh petrochemicals, sulphates, GMOs, parabens, mineral oil, phthalates and artificial colours or fragrances".

I'm liking the sound of their Cranberry Bio Exfoliating Scrub which uses natural fruit acids, bamboo extracts and cranberry seeds to cleanse and polish skin.

Dewy, glowing skin would have to be top of my wish list when it comes to my beauty regime, so I've been testing out AUM Brightening Face Balm over the past few weeks. They say: "The certified organic lotion promises to lighten skin tone, reduce signs of hyperpigmentation and smoothe skin texture" and boasts active ingredients like ginseng, Vitamin C and their special Marine Complex.

I have to say I am not a huge fan of the scent of this serum-like product, but it does seem to be helping to fade a pigmentation spot on my cheek and my skin has been looking clearer overall so will keep it up.

What I am loving is the AUM Firming Eye Cream. It's thinner than other eye creams I've used before, but it absorbs into the skin beautifully and really does make that area feel tighter and fresher.

They say: "Aum’s pioneering hero ingredient, Okra, is clinically proven to inhibit the facial muscle contractions that cause lines and wrinkles when you smile, frown or raise an eyebrow" - which sounds to me like natural, pain-free botox in a bottle. Who could argue with that? Find stockists here

I've been wanting to try out Miranda Kerr's Kora Organics products for a while now and after seeing Yasemin tout the benefits of the Kora Energising Citrus Mist on Primped last week I'm adding it to my basket! Sounds like the perfect product to have on hand when the weather starts to change and the air con in the office gets too much.

When it comes to Autumn tones, my makeup collection is sadly lacking so I've been trying something new with the Jane Iredale Just Kissed Lip Plumper. I am personally loving the new plummy Rio shade which will hit stores in April. It's not a colour I would normally wear but it's nice to have a change and the mint and ginger 'plumping' ingredients make your lips feel cool and tingly.

Finally for nails, I cannot rave enough about Orly polishes! I have had the same Orly shade on my toes all summer (Hot Shot) but coming into the cooler months I'm feeling a switch to pastel. Getting back to nature / Part 1: Healthy, natural and delicious!

Eco-friendly, green, organic, natural... these words have been creeping into the everyday vernacular more and more with each new day over the past few years. Never before has there been such a mainstream interest in what we're putting in our mouths, putting on our faces and wearing on our bods.

Vegan and raw food cafes are popping up everywhere, and not just in the 'hippie' towns you used to expect to find them in. We're more conscientious, and more informed about health than ever... and perhaps, just a little obsessed with food. Hey, nothing wrong with that if it's for the right reasons.

I'm certainly no expert on the topic, nor am I vegetarian or vegan. I've been known to binge like a banshee on sweets and have a unhealthy hankering for cheese and bread pretty much all the time. But I do feel so much better after eating fresh, healthy meals (funny, that!) and have found myself scrutinising food labels a lot more closely of late, and not the kilojoules part.

I love trying taste testing new foods and discovering new ingredients to cook with. I'm definitely getting on the chia, goji, quinoa, *insert new superfood here* bandwagon and my tummy is thanking me.

I've also been following Wellness Warrior Jessica Ainscough for a while now and am so inspired by her strength, knowledge and delicious-looking recipes. Jess is on a mission to help banish the unhealthy relationship many of us have with food. Her new e-book Make Peace With Your Plate should be requisite reading for every teenage girl.

Medical issues, ethical choices and intolerances aside, I'm just digging delicious and healthy recipes. Adding these to my must-try list...

It's been a crazy week of travelling, back-to-back meetings and catching up with gorgeous friends in Sydney for me this week which has meant one sadly neglected blog!

1. We need to talk about... Ovarian Cancer. Every year around 800 Australian women will lose their battle with ovarian cancer, with one woman dying every 11 hours. Horrendous!

February is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and my dear friend Sarah is sharing her personal journey with the world through her blog See How I Run. Check out her inspiring prose, get clued up on this nasty disease and help spread the word this month. Love you, Sah!

2. Why not make your cuppa count by holding an 'Afternoon Teal' at home or at work to help raise funds for vital research? Brisbane food blogger Kerry Heaney has some delicious recipe ideas to try.

Sarah Snook - Best Lead Actress in a Television Drama for her role in Sisters Of War

Making celebrities look gorgeous is all in a day's work for Napoleon Perdis Creative Team Leader Kate Squires. On Tuesday night she was rubbing shoulders with the big names of Australian stage and screen at the AACTA Awards (previously AFI awards), and more importantly, weaving her makeup magic to get them red-carpet-ready.

The fashion may not have blown anyone away, but I'm feeling inspired by these two simple but elegant beauty looks.

"Sarah [Snook] wanted to play up her lips, and as she was wearing head-to-toe red, it had to be a matte red to suit her youthful, cheeky self,"Kate says. "She's the Australian Emma Stone and will give Emma a run for her money! To keep the look elegant we added a red-carpet-ready lash to make her eyes pop and lined with a copper toned liner to play up her eye colour."

The highlight of this look is most definitely the well-defined red lips, which Kate achieved by "coating lips with Double Agent Rouge Lip Palette and pressing the powder over the top to mattify the lips".

The bold lips were offset with a sweep of China Doll Gel Eyeliner in Copper and a subtle flush to the apple of the cheeks with Barely Blushing Barely Rouge.

I love a red lip and this look has inspired me to test out a matte finish rather than the gloss I usually stick to.

Radha Mitchell

"Radha wanted a simple look with sleek lines," Kate says. "We opted for a liquid liner that slightly extended to light and elongate the eyes. The rest of her look was kept simple with peach tones on the cheeks and lips to complement her golden skin tone and blue eyes, adding the sparkle needed for red carpet moments."

Create this fresh look by spending time perfecting your base, then "sweep Color Disc Skinny Dip all over the eye from the lash line to the brow bone. Build pigment on the brow bone and inner corner of the eye to highlight and brighten the eyes."

Kate then added a '60s inspired liner using China Doll Gel Eyeliner Equinox and swept Color Disc Orange Sherbet high on top of the cheekbones to add flush to the cheeks but also warm the face.

The lip was kept natural with a coat of DeVine Goddess Lipstick in Atalanta and lined with Lip Pencil in Nude Awakening to seal in colour.

This fresh and natural look would work as much in the office as it does on the red carpet. Now, I'm off to find me some peach blush...

I almost spat my lunch out laughing so hard. So excited to see the guys behind Sh*t Fashion Girls Say have released Part Two. I know, I know... there's Sh*t Girls Say videos about just about everything doing the rounds at the moment but nothing has topped Sh*t Fashion Girls Say for me until now. I especially love the blowdrying of the bangs... we've all been there.

Girl of the Moment: Elizabeth Olsen

Ok, I'll admit it. Elizabeth Olsen makes me feel old. I spent a lot of time writing about her sisters back when I worked in tween magazine land and met them when they had just turned 19 (they're now 25!).

Being three years younger, Elizabeth would have had the BEST hand-me-downs to play with, although in her cover story in ASOS magazine, she reveals she outgrew them too soon.

"As I passed on them, [Elizabeth stands at 5-foot-7, four inches taller than Ashley while Mary-Kate is slightly under 5-feet tall], it was awful, because all my friends would get their clothes and I got nothing. Pants and shoes never fitted me after 14, but all my friends would say, 'Oh this? This is Mary-Kate's.' I'd be like, 'I hate you, that's so cute.'"

Lizzie (as she likes to be called) has certainly taken the indie-film path in stark comparison to Mary-Kate and Ashley's child star legacy, with undeniable success it would seem.

The Sundance darling debuted in Martha Macy May Marlene last year as an escapee of a cult trying to fit back into normal life (out in cinemas in Oz today), and her new film, the thriller The Silent House, premiered at Sundance last week.

Cementing her place on the style even further, Elizabeth graced the cover of Nylon's It Girl issue last October and this month appears along side a bevy of gorgeous up-and-comers on Vanity Fair's first Hollywood Issue.

Lizzie may be on a different path acting wise, but it's hard to deny her stunning features that throw off part Ashley and part Mary-Kate. She looks healthy, glowing and gorgeous in every shot we see of her. And the girl has style in her genes, it seems.

She told Refinery29 her favourite designers are: "Definitely Marni and Céline. I wore an orange floral Proenza Schouler dress that I was like obsessed with to the W magazine pre-Golden Globes party. I also love Isabel Marant; I don’t have anything of hers, but I love her. I’m actually not very good with all this designer stuff. I just know basic ones."

If given a choice between something bright and something safe, I'll always choose the loudest. I love bright colours! Sure, neutral shades and trusty black and white have their place in everyone's wardrobes, homes and offices, but I would rather be holding a bright orange umbrella when it rains; turning heads in a bold coat amongst a sea of black and coming home to an inspiring pop of colour.

I'm on the hunt for affordable accessories to update my apartment and am feeling very inspired by pops of neon at the moment.

In love with New Girl

I've had the biggest girl crush on Zooey Deschanel ever since Failure to Launch was released. But her dorkable new series New Girl has confirmed that she is definitely a girl I'd love to be best friends with!

Zooey plays the lead of the adorable, sing-out-loud, don't-give a-damn-about-what-anyone-thinks-of-me Jess, who finds herself a new home and three instant new best friends after catching her douchy boyfriend in the act with another girl.

I may have gotten a little excited and skipped ahead to watch the first nine episodes online. Yep, I am officially hooked.

Cute. Lovable. Hilarious! It's the perfect light-hearted show to wind down with.

Jess's style is a step away from my own personal style but I can't help loving the outfits she wears on the show. From cute '50s dresses to polka dot skirts and pussy-bow blouses, she's one headband away from a down-to-earth Blair Waldorf. Polished but not pretentious.

New year, new wardrobe

Carrie wondered if she could add an extra floor to her wardrobe

I'm in need of a serious style overhaul. Not in a 'my wardrobe is overflowing and I still can't find anything to wear' way. In the 'I literally have no idea how the items in my wardrobe came to be' way.

Sure, there are some key pieces I love dearly (and wear at least once a week), but after being on a tight budget over the past two years, I find myself craving an all-out, full-blown, max-out-the-credit-card shopping mission. And soon! (In reality, I'll be purchasing a few carefully selected pieces within budget to be my staples for the year and will update them with purse-friendly chain store buys.)

In an attempt to prevent future 'I'll wear it next time I'm in Bali' and 'maybe I could wear it with opaques in winter' piles that spend another two years hidden in the closet before being delivered to Vinnies, I need a plan.

As much as I would love to, I actual don't get to shop all that often (damn saving for a house and all that jazz). So before I click 'add to cart', I'm asking myself: What do I want my style to be in 2012? There's no time like right now for a change, after all!

Even though I don't want to think about it, we're going to start moving into the cooler months soon in Oz (perhaps a little later than others up here in Queensland) which means it's a good idea to invest in some trans-seasonal pieces.

Maxi skirts, wide-leg pants, sheer long-sleeved shirts and light jackets are on my radar.

Seems I have got myself a date with the natural food store tomorrow in my lunch break! Can't wait to try these recipes out and have some delicious snacks to get me through the working week.

I had the pleasure of meeting the absolutely lovely and completely down-to-earth Mandy Shadforth aka Oracle Fox late last year (just before she was jetting off to surf pipe with her hubby) and was over the moon for her when I found out about her collaboration with Billabong.

With the collection launching into stores last week, now everyone can nab a piece of Mandy's style. I'm loving how the shoot with Zippora Seven has been styled in a certain way as to emulate Mandy's personal style posts - all hair over face and surfer girl rock chick. Love, love, love!

New Year, One Freakin' Big Reset

The New Year's Eve celebrations are over. The fireworks have well and truly faded and the confetti has been swept up off the dance floor. Yes folks, it was back to reality for little ol' me today after two weeks off from my full-time job, and also what had unintentionally become a bit of an extended break from As Seen In.

After working day in and day out for two years on my little love project, last year I was feeling a tad burnt out and most frustratingly, was absolutely lacking inspiration. And there is no worse a time to upkeep a blog when you're not feeling the most positive. No-one wants to receive that yuckiness in their inbox each week. And I certainly wouldn't be proud of what people were seeing when they logged onto As Seen In.

So, in the grand tradition of New Year's Resolutions I'd given myself the deadline of today to get back my spark, and get together a plan to kick-start As Seen In's little heart again because I believe in it and I hope that you do too. I want to make it easier than ever for you to track down that must-have item you've spotted in your favourite glossy - whether it be a fabulous new dress you NEED by this weekend, an eye-popping new shade of nail polish you're keen to try, or some quirky new decorating items to deck out your abode.

With last year came a move to a new city, a new job in an exciting organisation and a new home. As I channeled my energy into learning all I could in my new role and saw myself heading down many different paths, none of which were fashion related, needless to say I was feeling very guilty for letting the ball drop on As Seen In. Combine that with some nasty technical glitches and a stint without reliable internet (the horror!), and next thing you know I had a juggling act I couldn't sustain.

I've been so proud of others in the industry as their blogs grew, flourished and bounded onto the scene, but all the while I was feeling smaller and more insignificant as I felt my control slipping away.

Last week, I read this article by one of my favourite bloggers and inspirational ladies Gala Darling and it's was like it was written as a personal letter especially to me. I realised, you know what? It's ok to have some down time now and then. It's actually ok to give yourself some space to breathe and reassess and find your inspiration again. Because how can you unleash creativity and positivity on the world when you're feeling anything but?

So this is me putting out my intention to the universe. I'm bounding into 2012 with a renewed vigour, big plans and a whole lotta passion to throw at this here website and blog and I'd love you to come along for the ride.

Another day, not just another red carpet. The Golden Globes are always a big one on the style police radar, and yesterday's turn out of pretty dresses in rainbow hues was a welcome change to the more-often-than-not drab choices from some of Hollywood's big names. We absolutely love the apricot and flamingo pink shades of Emma Stone and Claire Dane's gowns - absolutely complimentary to their hair and skin tones and beautifully summery!

Don't you just love when you discover a new beauty product that feels like it was made just for you? On my recent holiday to New York, and while on the Sex and the City bus tour, I came across a gorgeous store called Fresh on Bleeker in the West Village (right near Magnolia Bakery).

I don't know if I am completely behind the eight-ball becauase I had never heard of this brand before, but apparently the stars of the show were big fans, and I can see why! Their gorgeous store welcomed me in with delicious scents and adorable sales assistants who were so helpful and introduced me to some of their most popular products.

Now, I am not normally one to spend up on beauty products... I am a simple 'cleanse, moisturise and go' girl most of the time, but I couldn't resist their delicious fragrances, and in particular, the Fresh Brown Sugar Body Cream and Fresh Sugar Plum Lip Treatment.

Launched in 1991, co-founders Lev Glazman and Alina Roytberg made Fresh the first company to pioneer the use of natural ingredients like suar, milk, soy and rice in modern day beauty treatments - and you can feel the difference in their products! I also received a sample of their Fresh Soy Face Cleanser and will definitely be adding this to my list of faves.
